Now, there was a time in my life where I actually painted miniatures. A time I now referred to as PD (pre-dip). With the aid or Armypainter products I have a Wood Elf army almost finished (details of what is to be next on the list coming to a post near you!) and a Beastmen force on the way. However, what I am after next is an actual painting project. Flex the ol’creative muscles with conversions and present something to the blog that Kahuna can ooh and aah over following his “Pictures or it didn’t happen.” requests… :-p
So, there are several forerunners for this project:
Daemons – Fully converted “evil heavenly host”; angelic executioners for Bloodletters, converted choir for Horrors etc.
Empire – Landship steam tank plans, make full use of old miniatures I have lying around for characterful units. Excuse to break out yellow and purple paints…
Tomb Kings – Persian or Macedonian Successor style. Break out the paints again! Work with an animated statue style for the main blocks of spearmen, skeletonised archers.
These are just some ideas buzzing around my head – any thoughts you’d like to add? I’m open to all ideas, consider it part of the “creative” process! 😉 Just add your comments below!
How about a skirmish based game as you are gonna put more effort into individual figures?
Skirmish games are excellent and provide good opportunity for lovely painted models. Unfortunately, for me, they do not provide the ownership that Warhammer does for my force. I like back stories, creating my own characters and regiments and this level of customisation just isn’t currently provided in most skirmish games.
My first thought was Skaven (something other than brown) but the sheer amount of models (worth in game terms what, 0.5 points each?!?!?) might actually kill you!
Empire provides a good project for gaudy, regional state trooper uniforms, but whenever I see them I always end up a bit meh…. more hummies….
Of the options provided above my vote is for Daemons – there are so many conversion opportunities, alternative miniatures to use and scope to make this unique to you.
However I will throw another spanner into the works… What about Bretonnians? Every model is an individual character….
Skaven and Bretonnians are a good call. I have a variety of models for both that can form the basis of a decent force (well, Skaven anyway, it’s like having an infestation! ) Wayne Kemp’s Skaven look so good, it would be a challenge to create a force that doesn’t emulate them too much. The chance to create my own A-Bomb would be interesting.
Bretonnians look amazing on the battlefield. It would be ace to paint each model individually, geek out over heraldic research etc. Be interesting to look into conversions for that. Many moons ago I considered Bretonnians using the Empire rules to allow massed decent (relatively) troop formations ans the return of foot knights! But with how well Bretonnians have “adapted” to 8th, it might be regarded as rather silly and pointless…
With regards to the Daemons, I was also considering mixing in a lot of clock work elements instead of the Heavenly Host plan. Much like the plane of Law in D&D.
Wayne paints faster (and to a better quality) than us mere mortals could ever achieve.
Brets have a lot of scope, and with their recent resurgence, can be quite competitive. Also I think there are quite a few alternative miniatures though they do range in scale compared to GW. The Bret players on the tournament circuit seem to be quite tight knit as well – speak to Sedge if you are interested he can probably hook you up at Slaughter.
Your Daemon ideas sound cool! I’m assuming clock work is something you might know a bit about…
Do a few test models of each and see what you think…
And remember – photos, or it didn’t happen!
True, what a fantastic army it was!
The clockwork thing was something I was considering applying to large machinery in the Empire army.
I’ll look into the Brets, as well. So, are the Bret playing community actually the Warhammer Masons?
