Following on from Warchief’s experiences with Beasthammer, comes my musings on my first tournament!
Now, for many years, many of you know I have not been a fan of tournaments – mostly as the idea of playing games against “That Guy” feels me with dread. Having had to experience them at my local GW has not help me to form a positive mindset of the tournament playing crowd..! Ask me prior to this and I would have said “Smelly, social inadequate cheesemongers.” Yes Kahuna, I mean you!
However, 2012 is the year of “wanting to play Warhammer” and with that in mind, a tournament would be a good motivator to actually painting miniatures. I missed Tides of Chaos as my Beastmen were not complete and was determined to get something painted before the end of the year and to actually play games!
When Warchief suggested Valhalla, which ran the South Coast GT comp, I was interested. Unfortunately due to the controversy surrounding the aftermarket of last year’s event, this was not to be. Luckily, Nick Pym stepped into the breach with Beasthammer and I was sold!
So obviously, what now follows are tales of my brutal Beasts, sweeping all before me…
Or not…
As we approached the event, I was dimly aware that the Beasts were taking too long (I bleeding hate Bestigors) to complete and I decided to find an alternative to take, based on model count and painting techniques. Tomb Kings, High Elves and Dwarfs were all considered and rejected before I found a Wood Elf force I had been playing with in 7th Edition. With a colour spray, few well picked colours and the ubiquitous Army Painter strong tone dip, an army was painted in Road Runner speed time!
Unfortunately, the list was complied with similar speed and thought! With no practice and no clue, I took to the field for my first competitive games of Warhammer!
To cut a long story short, I lost every game…
But I did have a lot of fun!
So I take it all back. My opponents were all lovely (with varying power levels for their armies), no-one smelt too bad and “That Guy” never surfaced (at least for me). So, would I do it again? Yep. See you at the Slaughter! I may spend all my time on the bottom tables, I may come last, but I’ll at least be doing it with a smile on my face!
I may actually even play test the list this time!
Sounds great, and like you had a lot of good fun. Do we get a battle report or is the spoon a report itself? 😉
I might have to look into these tournament things.
Your wish is my command!
It helps to go with a good group of people, also being on the bottom table does lower the chances of meeting “that guy” I suppose… 😉
Much beer was also consumed which helped!
Beer is good.
