The beginning of the end? (of an army)

28 07 2008

Hi all! Jabba here, returning from the hum-drum of normal life. After hearing there was a new WH40k rulebook out I got in touch with a few of you to scope out opinion. I was happy to find out that Conrad, Kahuna and Skilling (lifer) were all very much still in the hobby.

Conrad and Kahuna have also kindly pointed me in the direction of this blog site which I think will be an excellent incentive for me to get…..wait for it….a WHOLE army painted!!!!

I will try and keep this blog up to date as much as possible. At the moment I am deciding on which army to begin my comeback with. I have it narrowed down to 3 40k armies: Eldar, Tau and Marines. Eldar purely because my missus bought me some tasty Harlequins; Tau as, for some reason, love the Vespid and Kroot models; and Marines as I have always wanted to do a Soul Drinkers or Black Dragons chapter.

I’m currently reading through the Soul Drinkers omnibus and getting a lot of nice ideas for that but I am also swaying towards Black Dragons as there is a new Land Raider variant on the horizon that boasts super heavy flamers of some kind.

If someone wants to roll a dice for me that would be ace. 4+ and I’ll do Soul Drinkers :P

Speak to you all soon,
Jabba.

Breathing in Some New Life

20 07 2008

So now Kahuna has got me involved I suppose I’d better write my first post!

Since starting uni almost a year ago, I pretty much stopped the hobby – not on purpose but I just lost the time which I would usually spend on it.

As such, I’ve decided to start getting the ball rolling again – easiest way to do this is via painting.

So I have two projects to work on:

1) My Vampire Counts

I’ve had this army a few years now and with the new army book out (seems a while ago, but I still haven’t played a game with the new list), I’ve decided to re-do the army and paint the whole lot again.
Won’t be long until the boredom of painting skeltons sets in, but Im aiming to paint at least 200 points a month – getting me 2000 done within a year.

The advantage of already having the army is that I’m able to play test lots of lists, but hopefully in the next 12 months, I’ll have a good looking army.

2) Imperial Guard – Cadians
This has been a very long project. I already have a fair portion of an army painted but I’m taking a while over it – so far it’s the army I’m most proud of the way it looks.
I’m not setting myself any targets with this one, but it will be used as a distraction when bored of painting the undead.

Hopefully I’ll get some photos of these done so far up soon.

So nothing brand new for me, instead just breathing in some new life into my existing armies.

TMNP 2: The Secret of the Dip

20 07 2008

Having been a good few months since the surprise unveiling of my Tomb Kings army at the Easter retreat, I though I better put up a basic “how to” on dipping as frankly it’s a technique that every painter should consider at one time or another – especially if on a tight schedule… Painting singular miniatures may be an art form, but painting an army is pure science…

2008 – Rest of year ambitions

14 07 2008

Glad to here you had a good weekend at the tournament – work makes planning ahead a non-starter at the moment.  Are there any photos?

Having completed moving house, the wargames table is set up in the garage and the painting table up and running in the spare bedroom.  Since March I have been quite restricted on the painting front, but will post some pictures of my new Warmachine force (damn Salute!) and a new Bloodbowl Undead team.

Most of my energy at the moment aimed at Flames of War, I hope to complete my 8th Army forces by October, and then move in to the 1944 Normandy stuff before Christmas.  All well and good, but I keep getting distracted by my Warhammer High Elves – I’ve not grown out of warhammer yet……

Photos to follow.

Hurry up with the Army Books!!!!

9 07 2008

So I went to a 2250pts Warhammer tournament on the weekend along with Clee and Kris. And first off I have to say that I was surprised (in a good way), the Spikey Club held it in a good venue, with a bar next door, it was well staffed by normal guys, non I am happy to say would fit the current critera of a GW Manager. Also on the whole there wern’t that many beardy players there, although tournaments tend to bring them out from under there stones, and this year they seemed to be armed with demon lists, but all the opponements i faced were more interested in having fun than winning at all costs.

How did I do? In one word terrible lol. This was mainly because two weeks before the tournament i received a email informing me that I would have to use the WD list. This put some serious restrictions on what I could field as I didnt want to take unpainted figures (although there were others there with totally unpainted armies which i feel should not be allowed). Will I be going again next year? I think all of us agreed that we want to come back and try again, and by that time the new army books for Hordes of Chaos and Lizardmen will be out so ill have even more choice and a much more competeive list. One thing for sure is ill better be prepared to take on demons as they are very nasty, even when people are not being beardy, which means ill have to get some practise games in as i was very rusty.

On a different note I have been keeping up with my painting and have been persuaded to start a new project… Hordes, which are a pleasure to paint as i love the miniatures. I currently have to idea on how to play the game but once I have painted my 4 man box set ill treat myself to the rule book and maybe even play a small game. I also painted up a unit of leadbelchers as I could use them in both my warhammer army and in quest.

For next months painting project im spoilt for choice as per normal. I have 10 chaos warriors I need to finish to complete a unit of 20 i started 18 months ago so I would like to finally get them done, plus another skorne miniature for hordes. Also with the release of the 5th edition of 40k coming up soon and the rule changes that have been anounced I have been tempted to redo a space marine army so if I have the time ill try paint up a unit. Im also going to purchase some LOTR figs so expect to see them up and running soon.
